Teddie R. Haslem (lovingly known as Ted) was born on December 7, 1960, to the late Calvin Haslem Sr., and Mary Jane (Miller) Haslem. His battle with illness ended and he transitioned from this earthly life on September 16, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Ted was born in Marshallville, GA, and relocated to Akron, OH with his family in 1967. In his youth, he was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir.
Ted attended Akron Public Schools, including Jennings Junior High and North High School, from which he graduated in 1981. During his time in high school, Ted was a star wrestler and won many awards for his skill and agility on the mat.
Ted was employed at Valley View Nursing Home shortly after High School and remained there as Head of the Maintenance Department for many years. If you knew Ted in his younger years, then you knew he was a FANTASTIC skater! He was always one of the smoothest skaters in the rink. He could often be found skating at The Rollercade and Hawkins Skating Rink.
Ted was always a very nice dresser. He modeled and enjoyed playing pool and hanging out with friends. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his daughters and his grandchildren. He also really enjoyed visits from his barber, Corey Spragling.
Ted is preceded in death by his parents, Calvin Sr. and Mary Jane, sisters, Ruthie Haslem, Mary L. Bell, and Mary E. Johnson, brother, Calvin Haslem Jr., brothers-in-law, William E. Bell Sr. (Scrapper) and Willie J. Smith (Gene), nephew, Ryan Johnson, niece, Rachelle Johnson, great-nieces Emonnie Parham, Savannah Haslem, Chase Stone Pullum, and great-great niece, Lindsay Michelle Rigby.
He is survived by daughters Te’Eria L. Jones, and Alla’hea Jones, sisters Bettye Ferguson, Gwen Smith, and Willie R. Porter, former wife and best friend Erica Jones, life-long brothers Keith Johnson, (cousin) Derak Williams, Sammy Williams, Jr., and Julius Williams, grandchildren Jamere, Kayden, and Jace Jones and Cartier, Calii, and Calia Spragling, and MANY nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and other relatives and friends.
The family would like to extend a special Thank You to Ted’s second family at Phoenix of Fairlawn, all the nurses and aides who cared for him, and the medical staff at Summa Health System (Akron City Hospital),
Ted was a father figure to all his nieces and nephews and was always good for a witty comment. His wit, his charm, and his laugh will be greatly missed. Rest well, Teddie Bear.
