Pauline “Bookie” Jones

Born on January 12, 1938, in Meridian, Mississippi, Pauline Jones, affectionately known as

"Bookie," "Missy," "Gramps," and "Gramp-Granny," was the daughter of Marvin and Mildred

(Smith) Robinson. At the age of two, Pauline’s family joined the Great Migration, moving north

to Akron, Ohio, where her father found work at the B.F. Goodrich Tire and Rubber Factory.

Pauline attended South High School in Akron, where she met Leon Hall. Together, they

welcomed their cherished daughter, Twyla Genee’ (Robinson) Sullivan. In 1960, Pauline married

Cecil Jones. The couple spent many happy days fishing and playing cards with Pauline’s sister,

Priscilla, and brother-in-law, Robert.

Pauline built a career as a domestic worker, most notably with the Thompson family, who

treated her and her family as part of their own, often including them in outings and events.

Later, she worked at the Summit County Children’s Home and eventually joined the Edwin Shaw

Rehabilitation Center, where she remained until her retirement in 2003.

A lifetime member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, she sang in the youth choir as a child and

later taught Sunday school. She was a devoted attendee of Bible study under Dr. Arthur Kemp,

a practice she continued until her health no longer allowed it.

Pauline was named after her mother’s sister, Pauline, from Brooklyn, New York. Her beloved

nickname “Bookie” originated with her great-niece Shellaree Twitty, who first called her that

after Pauline affectionately referred to her as "Bookie." The name stuck and became part of her

identity. The nickname “Missy” came from a neighborhood child, Lela Veal.

Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Jones; her parents, Marvin and Mildred

Robinson; and her sisters, Priscilla Sales and Ruth Dilsworth.

Left to cherish and celebrate Pauline’s wonderful life are her devoted daughter, Twyla G.

Sullivan, and her loving grandchildren: Larry, Darius, and Autumn Sullivan. Her special grandson,

Dante Harriston, and her precious great-grandchildren: Bryanna, Larry III, Amoni, Denzell,

Latasha, LaDarrion, LaNay, LaRaya, Jayla, Aniyah, Amora, LaVay, Damonte, Devyn, Drelan,

D’Andre, and Jason. Great-great-grandchildren: Stephen, Riyanna, LaFeyla, Cora, Melani,

Saylm, Javoni, and Jayvyn.
