Michael D. Bridges, 72, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2025, following complications from amassive heart attack and stroke.
Michael served his country with honor in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where his courage and dedication to his fellow soldiers exemplified his commitment to service. He received an honorable discharge in 1978. His military experience profoundly shaped his worldview and gave him a deep understanding of life's complexities.
Like many veterans of his generation, Michael quietly battled the challenges of PTSD throughout his life. While this sometimes made him appear reserved and misunderstood, those who knew him best understood that beneath his thoughtful exterior was a man of great kindness and love who cared deeply for his family.
Michael found joy in life's simple pleasures. He was an avid fisherman enjoying the peacefulness of the water. His passion for restoration extended to his prized Lexus, which he lovingly maintained. A true music enthusiast, Michael amassed an extensive collection spanning all genres, with jazz holding a special place in his heart. His faithful companion through many of these quiet moments was his beloved cat, who rarely left his side.
Professionally, Michael was a skilled welder and student of architectural design. He possessed a remarkable gift for creating and restoring things with his hands, bringing new life to objects others might have discarded.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Constance Wilson and Smith Beal.
He is survived by his devoted sisters Patricia Matthews and Marcia(Reginald) Anderson; his brother Leslie, niecesKashawna Foster, Keela(Steve) DeCoux, Yaminah Smith and Regina (Gulliuame) Charrier, nephew Dedrick(Irene) Boyd; and cherished cousins Howard Bell(Deborah), Edwina Dortch, Carolyn Harbin, and Eleanor(Robert) Dockery, all of whom were integral parts of his life's journey.
Michael's family remembers him as a man of remarkable depth whose experiences shaped him into someone who understood both life's struggles and its quiet joys in his own profound way. His memory will be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
