Drake Antwan West, age 55, unexpectedly passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026, in Akron, Ohio. Born on July 26, 1970, in Akron, Drake was the beloved son of the late Linda Sue Ware West and Willie West. A man of quiet strength and deep conviction, his life was anchored in service, integrity, and an unwavering devotion to others.
A proud Akron native, Drake graduated from Buchtel High School, where his leadership, discipline, and sense of responsibility first took root. He went on to continue both his academic and athletic pursuits at Baldwin Wallace University before completing his college education at Thee Ohio University, where he studied literature and humanity. His love for learning reflected his belief in growth, reflection, and understanding the human experience—values he carried throughout every season of his life.
Drake dedicated many years of faithful service to Kent State University, where he was more than an employee; he was a steady presence, a trusted leader, and an advocate for students and community alike. His work was guided by consistency, compassion, and a genuine desire to see others succeed. He approached his career with humility and pride, understanding that meaningful work is measured not by title, but by impact.
To know Drake was to encounter a life rooted in service. He gave of himself fully and without hesitation, showing up with intention and authenticity. Whether known as Coach, Mentor, or simply Dad, he had a rare ability to connect—challenging people to rise while making them feel seen, valued, and believed in. He never sought recognition, yet his influence quietly filled every room he entered.
Drake’s impact reached far beyond athletics. He taught lessons shaped by character, accountability, and discipline principles meant to guide life long after the final whistle. He believed in doing what was right when no one was watching, in leading with humility, and in investing in others without expectation. The countless lives he shaped stand as living proof of his purpose-driven life.
As a father, Drake was a steady source of strength, wisdom, and unconditional love. He led not by instruction alone, but through example—demonstrating integrity, dependability, and compassion in every season. His guidance was intentional, his love unwavering, and his presence transformative. The values he instilled and the care he gave will continue to live on through his children and all who were blessed to call him family.
Drake is preceded in death by his mother, Linda Sue Ware West; his grandparents, Louise and Anthony Ware; his brother, Christopher West; and his father, William E. Booker. In addition to his father, Willie West, Drake leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Andrea Suggie West of 27 years, and his four sons: Jesus Linear (who has both a son and daughter), Robert Neloms, Devin West, and Dylan West. He also leaves behind his brothers Demane West and Dante Booker, and his sister, DaShon West Johnson. Though words cannot fully capture the depth of his absence, Drake’s voice, values, and wisdom will continue to echo through generations especially beyond the walls of 1040. He chose service over self, purpose over recognition, and love over convenience and that legacy will endure.
The West family extends heartfelt gratitude to all who have shared their prayers, memories, and support during this difficult time.
