Doshie Gulley was born on March 6, 1944 in Akron, Ohio. She departed this life on October 30, 2021.
Ms. Doshie lived in Akron Ohio her entire life. She worked at Broadview Medical Center, Summit County Children Services, ABC School for Unwed Mothers, Planned Parenthood, Open M and Summit County Board MR/DD for over 20 years until she retired. She loved working at the MR/DD Board and considered many of her co-workers as family; as she stayed in contact with them. She also started a business, Abilities Travel, that specialized and designed trips for individuals with developmental disabilities. Doshie loved working with this population; as she continued to provide support up until her passing. She also really enjoyed traveling and would take her children along on the trips as chaperones. Doshie was appointed a member of the Open-M Advisory Board; as a delegate to participate in a mission trip; spending a week in one of the poorest nations in the world, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. While there, she lived, worked and interacted with handicapped and malnutrition children. There was an article in the Akron Beacon Journal about the mission trip; with a focus on Ms. Doshie Gulley.
She loved the color red. She enjoyed the casinos, live entertainment, socializing, making money, working with Kenny Shook and spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed listening to jazz and blues. and was a member of Faith Temple Baptist Church. She loved her church family and the GULLEY Family! Mother, was the only name her children were permitted to call her. She was very encouraging of her children being independent, educated, self-sufficient, motivated and dependable. To know her was to love her; and to love her was to know her. Mother will be missed!
She lived a long life and was respected and loved by many. Unfortunately, in January of 2017, she was involved in a horrific Hit & Skip incident; which altered her life forever. She was left paralyzed from the waist down and ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Jennie Lee Brown, special aunt, Lillie Mae Tucker, sister, Peggy Draine, special cousins, Juliett Jackson Palmer and Samuel Springfield as well as her eldest daughter, Doshella Ann Gulley (Dee).
