Alberta Holmes, age 92, was called home to be with the Lord on June 13, 2025.
Born on July 26, 1932, in Weirton, West Virginia, Alberta was the beloved daughter of the late Pete Maceo and Daisy Vinson Campbell. She was the first in her family to graduate high school, proudly earning her diploma from Randolph High School, a testament to her determination and pioneering spirit.
The Campbell family lived in a predominantly white city, Mogadore, Ohio, where Alberta told her father, “Dad, there is nobody out here for us to marry.” This sentiment led the Campbell family to relocate to Akron, Ohio, where a new chapter would begin and it was there, on Glenwood Avenue, that Alberta met the love of her life, Herman Holmes. They were united in holy matrimony on June 13, 1953, and began a lifelong journey together, grounded in faith, family, and love.
Their union was blessed with two children: Rhonda Charisse (Khadijah) and Herman Timothy. Their family continued to grow with the loving adoption of Jeffrey and Jerry Campbell, and later, with the addition of daughter Alexis Broaddus. In her later years, Alberta was lovingly supported by her bonus daughter, Karen Mack, and her special niece, Gail Campbell.
Alberta dedicated much of her professional life to serving others. She began her career at Ravenna Arsenal and went on to serve for nearly 20 years at the Brecksville Veterans Administration Hospital as a Psychiatric and Nursing Assistant. Her compassion, strength, and steady presence left a lasting impact on all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Daisy Campbell; her beloved husband, Herman Holmes; brothers James (Doris), Maceo, Paul (Sylvia), William, and Charles Campbell; sisters Helen Brandon, Pauline Campbell, Jessie Campbell, Ida Mae (Carl) Robinson, and Jackie (Walter) Jones; great-grandson DeAnthony Cunningham; great-granddaughter India Holmes; and great-great-grandson Laiden.
She leaves to cherish her memory: daughters Khadijah (Mohammad) Cooper, Alexis Broaddus, and Karen (Charles) Mack; sons Herman Timothy (Renee) Holmes, Jeffrey Campbell, and Jerry (Dorothy) Campbell; brothers Joseph (Michiko) Campbell and Phillip (Laura) Campbell; sisters Mildred Martin and Patricia Cheek; sisters-in-law Peggy Holmes and Emma Campbell.
Alberta also leaves behind a loving legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless other relatives and dear friends who were touched by her wisdom, warmth, and unwavering faith.
Her memory will be forever held in our hearts.
